Smartphones are changing the face of Security Monitoring Systems

Many of us still remember the vintage Detex watchclocks with the little keys and paper discs. They were heavy, expensive, and hard to read. You could never find them when you had to conduct an investigation.

Over time most have been replaced as organizations shifted to barcodes, iButtons, RFID, and others. According to a recent survey, about 60% of all guard tour systems are using iButtons. This shift was strongly promoted by the manufacturers of iButton readers.

While iButtons were satisfactory, they all had to go through a download step to a local computer before they could produce reports. As a result they were not “real time”, and most were not even web based. All of these current readers/scanners had very limited capability. They could not send GPS locations, photos, report content, etc. to support a Daily Activity Report.

The world of Security Verification is beginning a major change in data collection devices. Within a few years most of these current devices will be replaced by Smartphones!

Oversight Inc’s GuardChecker Security Verification service has accepted this eventuality. Today we have already added a variety of mobile devices and apps to our existing devices. The good news from our perspective is that our Service was designed to easily accept ever changing data collection devices.

Our web based service still collects, stores, and reports a comprehensive record of a Security Officer’s tour, but now it is “real time”. We can now report a GPS with each scan, with many more features to come, including photo, detailed content. Management Reports are still available to authorized managers on any computer, tablet or smartphone, anytime, anywhere.
